Education matters! | The duty

In the pages of Duty of September 23, Mr. Normand Baillargeon rightly mentions that education is one of the most vital and important institutions of a society that calls itself democratic and that teachers play a central role in making it exist.

He goes on to mention that teacher training should be very demanding to, probably also, attract the best candidates to our faculties of education. I am convinced that this is the way to follow so that the world of education can regain all its letters of nobility.

This position raises, on the other hand, a primordial question, that of the recognition of the teaching profession. And it is certainly not by minimizing the lack of resources in our schools that candidates will rush to the faculties of educational sciences. I also dare to suggest that salary conditions need to be reviewed if we want to have better teaching candidates.

Be serious ! If we want the profession to regain all its credibility, we will one day have to offer teachers working conditions that match the importance we attach to education.

Meanwhile, our next generation prefers to attend the faculties most recognized by our society: those of law, medicine and engineering, to name just a few!

Sad observation for all those who know how to recognize the place that education should occupy for a self-respecting society! In these conditions, I am afraid that the cynicism towards teachers will continue if the status quo continues!
