(St. John’s) The Newfoundland Growlers have been temporarily evicted from their home at Mile One Center pending the findings of an independent investigation into allegations of “inappropriate behavior in the workplace.”
In a statement Wednesday, the City of St. John’s said Deacon Sports & Entertainment Limited, the company that owns the Growlers, was notified of its suspension just over a week before the ECHL club are not playing their first home game this season.
The municipality declined to specify the nature of the allegations.
“Given the seriousness of the allegations, we had no choice but to take action,” St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen said in a statement. We realize this is a disappointment for hockey fans in the region, but the health and safety of our employees is our top priority. ”
The Growlers are the Toronto Maple Leafs’ school club in ECHL. The team said they were trying to relocate the Growlers to Coca-Cola Coliseum, home of the Toronto Marlies, their American Hockey League school club, during the investigation in St. John’s.
The Growlers started their season by winning their first three games against the Trois-Rivières Lions, the Montreal Canadiens’ new school club in the ECHL.
