Earthquake in Turkey and Syria: rescuers remain hopeful

Two days after the deadly earthquake hit Turkey and Syria, rescuers are still hopeful. Stuck under a wall, Myriam keeps a protective arm around her little sister. In an exhausted whisper, she begs the rescuers: “Get us out of here! I’ll give you anything you want, if you get us out of here.“After nearly two days under the rubble, the two sisters are rescued and reunited with their father’s arms.

A race against time

For the research teams, the challenge is now twofold: trying to find possible survivors, but above all finding a way to quickly extricate them from the rubble. For loved ones, the anguish is unbearable. The many dead bodies are stored on the sidewalks. Miracles are rare, so when they do happen, the survivors are cheered on by the crowds. Even today, dozens of children have been saved.
