According to a UN report, the world population will reach eight billion on November 15, 2022. Should this figure worry us?
The Earth has never been so populated. According to the UN, it will be home to eight billion inhabitants on November 15, 2022. In 2050, 9.7 billion people will populate it, and more than 10 billion in 2080. This population is favored by progress in medicine and the decline mortality, as well as the development of emerging countries in Africa and Asia. The population of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt and India is thus greater than before.
Is this population bearable for the Earth? “More than the number, it is rather the consumption of each human being that will be the issue“, noted Laurent Toulemon, researcher, demographer at the national institute for demographic studies. Other countries are expected to depopulate, such as those in Eastern Europe, which could lose up to 20% of their population by 2050.
