NATO knows its future leader. Mark Rutte was appointed as the organization’s next secretary by the 32 member countries on Wednesday, June 26. The Dutch Prime Minister, 57, will take up his duties at the head of NATO on October 1, replacing the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg, who has been in office for ten years and who has served four terms in a row. “I know that I will leave NATO in good hands”the latter immediately reacted on the social network “Mark is a true defender of transatlantic relations, a strong leader and a consensus builder”he added.
The ambassadors of the 32 countries endorsed this appointment during a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, the political governing body of the Alliance. In addition to the conflict in Ukraine, the Dutch leader will have to deal with the result of the American elections in November. A veteran of European politics, Mark Rutte very quickly obtained the support of the most important countries in the Alliance, starting with the United States, which alone represents half of the military weight of the Alliance.
The way was clear for the Dutchman after last week’s withdrawal of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis’ candidacy. “Your leadership and experience will be crucial to the Alliance during this difficult time”reacted on the social network
