Should the conduct of seniors be regulated? The question arises after the tragedy that occurred this weekend in Berck-sur-Mer. A 76-year-old motorist mowed down a dozen pedestrians with his car. He obviously confused the brake and the accelerator.

The accident that occurred last weekend in Berck-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais), in which a 76-year-old driver injured a dozen people revives the debate. Should we impose a control for the elderly at the wheel? Motorists over 75 are not against it. “I would pay a little visit, it would not be bad (…), I’m not against them giving me the license again if they want”admits one of them.

Prevention sessions

A driving instructor thinks that a regular examination would be more prudent. According to official figures, the over 75s are the most involved in accidents, along with young people aged 18-24. The oldest are due to a decrease in alertness, often due to taking medication. For road prevention, it would be necessary to carry out checks throughout life. Prevention sessions already exist but on a voluntary basis.
