Donald Tusk, leader of the coalition of pro-European forces, was elected Monday, December 11 as Polish Prime Minister by the Diet, the lower house of the Polish Parliament, after eight years of populist-nationalist government. 248 deputies voted for him, 201 against. “This is a great day for all those who, for many years, believed that things would get better, that we would chase away the darkness, the evil”he declared after his election. “From tomorrow, we will be able to right the wrongs, so that everyone feels at home in Poland”he added.
“I look forward to working with you, starting with this week’s important European summit”, reacted Monday evening on X (ex-Twitter) the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen. “Your experience and strong commitment to our European values will be valuable in making Europe stronger.”, she added. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also welcomed the election of Donald Tusk, calling for “unity” facing Moscow.
Tuesday, during his general policy speech, before a parliamentary vote of confidence, Donald Tusk notably promised to resolve the conflict on the border with Ukraine blocked by Polish truckers. “We have already found the solutions to respond as quickly as possible to the needs of Polish carriers and unblock the border”he declared, accusing the previous government of having “abandoned” the truckers who have been protesting for a month. Donald Tusk should be able to represent his country at the next European summit, Thursday and Friday in Brussels.
