Former US President Donald Trump has raised more than US$34 million in donations towards his campaign in the 2024 presidential election since the start of the year, even seeing a surge in donations following his court appearance in New York.
According to his campaign team, Mr. Trump has received as many donations since March 30, the day of his appearance, as in the previous three months.
In his most recent tally of donations received for his campaign, which is due to the U.S. Federal Election Commission on Saturday, the former president says he received $18.8 million in his main campaign account. and another joint fundraising account during the first three months of the year.
Of that total, which covers the period from January 1 to March 31, $4 million was received after Mr. Trump was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury in connection with bribes paid during the 2016 presidential campaign.
The numbers in the document to be filed Saturday were first revealed by Politico.
Mr. Trump began using his impeachment to solicit donations. According to his team, he has so far raised $15.4 million since the charges were filed.
The former president, who is also the subject of several other criminal investigations, tried to use his setbacks in court to motivate his supporters, saying that all the lawsuits against him were brought for political reasons.
He has also qualified his file in New York as being “election interference”, while stressing that this event could help him to grow his pool of supporters.
Mr. Trump was ahead among Republicans in the early stages of the 2024 election campaign, but some of the party’s largest donors have chosen to turn to other candidates for this race.
Until his impeachment, the donations received for his campaign in no way compared to the colossal sums he could amass in a few days, even a few hours, when he was president.
Only a few candidates have officially entered the race for the 2024 election: UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who was nominated by Mr. Trump, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and entrepreneur in Vivek Ramaswamy technology.
Other candidates, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, are expected to jump into the race by mid-July, when the next reports on donations raised are expected.
