Bryan McCormick will spend the next six months in prison. This is the sentence he received for having subjected his ex-spouse, businesswoman and influencer Elisabeth Rioux, to numerous acts of violence.
It was a joint suggestion by the Crown and defense counsel, submitted to Judge Nancy McKenna, of the Court of Quebec, who endorsed it Tuesday morning at the Saint-Jérôme courthouse.
The 28-year-old will also be subject to three years’ probation.
Bryan McCormick pleaded guilty last December to three counts — assault, death threats and mischief, the destruction of objects — committed in the context of domestic violence.
These admissions of guilt had been made within the framework of an agreement concluded with the Crown, which had then agreed to seek a conditional stay of proceedings for the four other counts that Bryan McCormick was facing, namely say assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, stalking and harassing communications.
There had therefore been no trial.
His guilty pleas also prevented the victim from testifying.
The acts alleged against Bryan McCormick began in November 2019 and continued after the birth of their child, in July 2020.
The days of September 28 and 29, 2020 were a turning point, can we read in the 5-page document, signed by the 28-year-old man, who thus recognizes each of the facts.
While the young woman had just told him that she thought it best that they take “time each on their own”, these words triggered anger in the man. While she had her daughter in her arms, to give her a drink, Mr. McCormick took his wife by the hair and approached her face “to tell her that it was not going fast enough for her taste. “.
As she was scared, she opened the baby monitor to record it. In a fit of anger, he destroyed it. She then managed to film it with her cell phone. To unlock it with facial recognition, he grabbed his face, leaving a bruise under his chin and hurting his lip which started bleeding.
He got more angry and started to strangle her: “I couldn’t lose anything, give me your cell code, I’ll kill you if you don’t give me the code.” He then crushed the young woman’s head with his foot. “The bed frame was destroyed during this event,” reads the briefing.
Elisabeth Rioux managed to contact a friend: Bryan McCormick then took her by the throat to prevent her from speaking, she reported. This friend came to pick her up with two men and they left the house with the baby. On September 29, she filed a complaint with the police.
The Agreed Statement of Facts, filed on the December day he entered his guilty pleas, lists 13 to 15 other episodes in which the man engaged in aggressive behavior, assault on the one who was then his spouse, destroys objects and punches holes in the walls with his fists.
