While the cases of murdered women multiply in Quebec this year, the Minister of Public Security, Geneviève Guilbault, announces the implementation of electronic anti-reconciliation bracelets for situations of domestic violence.
These devices will be introduced from spring 2022, first in the Quebec City region, as part of a pre-project.
At a press conference, Minister Guilbault described this announcement as “historic” in the context of the fight against violence against women.
The bracelets will be linked to a call center, which will receive an alert in the event of a reconciliation and will take the necessary measures to protect the victim.
Two researchers from the University of Montreal, Jean-Pierre Guay and Francis Fortin, carried out a study at the beginning of the year on the use of the electronic bracelet elsewhere in the world. They also surveyed local organizations about the advantages and disadvantages of this technology.
More details to come.
