(Saint-Denis) Canadian divers Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens reached the final of the men’s individual 10-metre platform event on Saturday at the Paris Olympic Games.
Zsombor-Murray of Pointe-Claire had a combined score of 410.80 for her six dives in the semifinal, while Wiens of Pike Lake, Sask., had 468.40 points.
They finished 10th respectivelye and fifth, as the top 12 divers advanced to the final, which will take place later Saturday at the Olympic Aquatics Centre.
Unsurprisingly, China’s Yuan Cao dominated the semi-final with 504.00 points, ahead of his compatriot Hao Yang (490.55) and Japan’s Rikuto Tamai (477.00).
China won seven of eight diving gold medals at the Tokyo Games three years ago. It is aiming for a clean sweep in the French capital, and is currently 7-for-7 at the Paris Games.
Zsombor-Murray and Wiens won bronze in the 10-metre platform synchronized event earlier in Paris. They became the first Canadian divers to medal in a men’s event at the Olympics since Alexandre Despatie at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Canada won just one diving medal at the 2021 Tokyo Games, which went to Jennifer Abel and Mélissa Citrini-Beaulieu in the 3m synchro springboard.
