16 years after the disappearance of Maddie McCann in Portugal, then four years old, the excavations resumed to try to find her, Tuesday, May 23. Laurent Desbonnets, correspondent in Berlin, explains that we do not really know, for the moment, why the German justice has decided to relaunch the investigation.

Sixteen years ago, Maddie McCann, a four-year-old British girl, disappeared in Portugal. The excavations have resumed to try to find her, as announced by the German justice. An artificial lake has been explored since Tuesday May 23 in Portugal. Journalist Laurent Desbonnets, France Télévisions correspondent in Berlin (Germany), explains that “The German authorities repeat that it is important to maintain the secrecy around this research. No new comment therefore on the progress of the excavations, and no precise element on the reason which pushed the German public prosecutor’s office to ask the Portuguese for these new operations of research”.

“Meticulous work”

This research consists of “a meticulous job that still has to take place over several days, with dozens of police officers methodically inspecting every meter of ground. They seem to be concentrating on several specific places around the reservoir for now, but for now the Germans like the Portuguese say they need a little time before saying more”concludes the journalist.
