Director’s message | Why Sugar Sammy

“Do you think we can laugh at everything? To this question from a reader, Sugar Sammy answers in the simplest way possible, not without comic effect: “Yes. “This assurance that we can make fun of everything, the comedian has made a kind of program. Which partly explains why he’s so disturbing, but also why his politically incorrect jokes often provoke liberating hilarity.

On the occasion of his return to Quebec stages with the show you’re gonna laugh 2following the famous one man show bilingual with whom he toured for four years, we invited the comedian to become a one-day director of the Arts and Being section.

We didn’t choose it for its ability to flatter our collective ego in the sense of the hair, it goes without saying. We chose him for his unique profile and trajectory – a child of Indian immigrants from Côte-des-Neiges who carved out a place for himself on the world stage of humor by playing with the sensitive cords of his countries. hosts, all in four languages.

We also chose him out of curiosity, for the world whose doors he opens to us today: that of the neighborhood where he grew up, of the school he attended – the most multicultural in town – or of the comedy clubs Anglos where he has continued to play his jokes even recently. It must be admitted that this Montreal teeming with life and culture(s) does not suffer from excessive media coverage.

Any guest director, we will not hesitate to ask him some difficult questions. He is well placed to know that “who loves well punishes well”. So are you gonna read ? We hope so… if you’re willing to laugh sometimes at your expense.

It was the conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin who inaugurated the tradition of guest directors of the Arts section in 2014. The concept? In a way, we give the “keys” to the section to an artist, to whom we leave it to choose the subjects that our journalists will cover in this edition. Since then, a variety of personalities have been entitled to this treatment: comedian François Bellefeuille (2015), host Marc Labrèche (2016), writer Larry Tremblay (2016), singer-songwriter Cœur de pirate (2018), director Chloé Robichaud (2018), multidisciplinary artist Caroline Monnet (2019), filmmaker and author Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette (2021)… and now Sugar Sammy!
