Pok Pok grows
A mobile application for children that promotes slowness and rejects any addictive mechanics may be viable. Pok Pok, whose developer is based in Toronto, but which has a major Montreal branch, is an illustration of this: it announced this week that it had completed a round of financing totaling 6 million. “The money will be used to help Pok Pok to continue its mission of making screen time healthier for children”, particularly with an Android version, explains Félix Boudreau, vice-president of growth and marketing. Since 2022, Pok Pok increased its subscriber base nine-fold and recorded more than 1 million downloads.

eSIM à la carte
Montreal site Simbud.com has clearly moved up a gear for the 2024 summer holidays, with a dozen eSIM providers, the digital version of the SIM card that can be installed instantly. The phone must obviously be compatible, and these are generally data plans, without voice calls or texts. The prices, assures PlanHub, owner of Simbud, are “lower than anything you could find with your current operator.” Two examples: 10 GB for a month in the United States at $24.64, 20 GB in Europe for 15 days for $23.96.

Not so young accounts
It took only three minutes for accounts created for 13-year-olds to be exposed to adult content on Instagram, according to an experiment conducted by the Wall Street Journal and a computer science researcher from Northeastern University. Published this week, the results of the study which lasted seven months looked at Instagram Reels, these short videos mainly consumed on the recommendation of the social network. All it takes is for a teenager to favor certain suggestive content to quickly be offered videos theoretically reserved for adults.
