Did Manchester City kill the title race yet?

They are unstoppable. After their victory on the lawn of Brentford (1-0) Wednesday, December 29, the Cityzens widened the gap in the standings and now count respectively eight and nine points ahead on Chelsea and Liverpool (with one less game for the Reds). A comfortable lead, a few hours from the shock against Arsenal (Saturday January 1 at 1:30 p.m.), undefeated for six meetings in the Premier League and climbed back to fourth place in the standings.

October 30, 2021. This is the date to go back to see Manchester City lose points in the league. The Mancunian club then lost against Crystal Palace (0-2). But since then, the Skyblues impose their superiority in each match, and remain in particular on a series of ten victories in the league. An impressive statistic. And yet, this is already the fourth time this has happened under the Guardiola era. In the history of the Premier League, no other manager has succeeded more than twice.

“The gap is not because Chelsea and Liverpool lose points but because we win ten games in a row“, the 50-year-old technician said after the victory at Brentford, recalling all the same that he still remains “54 points to play” and that, therefore, the path to the title is still long.

If nothing is done yet, Manchester City has all the same looks of a future champion. 51 goals scored in 20 matches, 12 goals conceded for as many clean sheets … Here are the hallucinating statistics displayed by the Mancuniens in the Premier League on this first part of the season, which testify to their ability to be as effective defensively as offensively. It is quite simply the best attack and defense in the league right now. Their recent show of force against Leeds (7-0) is the perfect illustration.

Add to that a perfect control in the midfield (77% possession against Brentford), enhanced by the presence of Kevin De Bruyne, qualified “unique in the world“by his coach at a press conference, and you get a formidable team, balanced and certain of its qualities.

But the Mancuniens will have to be wary of their next opponent, the Gunners. In ambush at the foot of the podium, Alexandre Lacazette’s partners are currently surfing a good dynamic (six consecutive wins in the league, 14 goals scored in their last three meetings). It is therefore no longer the same team as the first leg which is about to challenge the Cityzens.

But despite this adversity, by virtue of its status (defending champion) and its Olympic form, Manchester City seems in a position of strength as this meeting approaches. By securing another victory in the league, its second against Arsenal this season, the Mancunian club would take off even more in the standings. Especially if to this success was added a draw between its direct competitors, Liverpool and Chelsea on Sunday. City would then have ten points ahead of the Blues and would grant themselves a little more the right to dream of the title, which would emerge a little more on the horizon.
