Asked about LCI on March 7, on the eve of International Women’s Rights Day, the president said that the share of women in the hemicycle had more than tripled in 2017, from 11 to 38% of deputies, due parity in the En Marche group.
Will Emmanuel Macron’s term be that of women in the National Assembly? Asked about LCI on March 7, on the eve of International Women’s Rights Day, the president said that the share of women in the hemicycle had more than tripled in 2017, from 11 to 38% of deputies, due parity in the En Marche group. ” First of all, thank you for reminding us, when I was elected we had 11% of women in the Assembly, we are at more than 38% because there is a majority group which is equal “said the head of state.
While it is true that a record was broken in June 2017, with 224 women elected out of 577 deputies, or 38.8% of the seats, the progress is however much less than what Emmanuel Macron claims. In fact, there were 155 women during the previous legislature, i.e. almost 27%. Far from the 11% quoted by the president, who refers more to the figures of twenty or twenty-five years ago.
It was not until 1997 that the 10% bar was crossed for the first time, with 73 women elected out of 577 deputies. Five years later, they were 77, or only 12% of deputies. The percentage increased to 18.5% in 2007, to 27% in 2012. Then to 39%, therefore, in 2017. An increase which is explained by the establishment in 2000 of financial sanctions, and their reinforcement for political parties not respecting parity.
