Davis Cup | Pospisil gives Canada a 1-0 lead

(Valencia) Canada took a 1-0 lead against South Korea in the first singles at the Davis Cup Finals.

Posted at 1:45 p.m.

British Columbian Vasek Pospisil defeated Seong-Chan Hong, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 (5), after a long duel of more than 2:30 hours.

Quebec’s Félix Auger-Aliassime will try to give the victory to the Canadian team as he faces Soonwoo Kwon in the second singles of the day.

After having flown over the second round, Pospisil, who is in his 24e Davis Cup presence, quickly trailed 3-0 and 4-1 in the third set. But he returned to the tie thanks to two breaks and the experience of the 32-year-old veteran eventually allowed him to win the tiebreaker.

If the doubles match is needed to determine the winner of the showdown, Pospisil and Auger-Aliassime will face the Korean duo of Nam Jisung and Song Min-kyu.

For the rest of the group stage, Canada meet Spain on Friday and Serbia on Saturday. The top two countries from each of the four groups will qualify for the finals scheduled for November 21-27 in Malaga, Spain.
