Bashar al-Assad’s regime has agreed to open two cross-border crossing points between Turkey and Syria for a period of three months, in order todeliver humanitarian aid to earthquake victimsannounced the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, on Monday 13 February. “I welcome Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s decision today to open the two crossings of Bab Al-Salam and Al Ra’ee between Turkey and northwestern Syria for an initial period of three month”Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

Before the earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey on February 6, almost all humanitarian aid for people living in rebel areas in northwestern Syria was brought from Turkey through the only crossing point of Bab al-Hawa. Initially, the United Nations guaranteed the opening of four crossing points between Turkey and Syria. But under pressure from Russia and China, three cross-border posts had been closed.

Washington quickly welcomed this announcement from Damascus, if it was followed up. “If the regime is serious about this, if the regime is ready to walk the talk, then it would be a good thing for the Syrian people.”Ned Price, spokesman for the US State Department, told reporters.
