Joe Biden considers the Israeli response to Gaza excessive. The criticism comes as the international community fears a major offensive in Rafah, the last refuge for displaced people in the Palestinian enclave.

In the crowded streets of Rafah (Gaza Strip), panic gripped the residents. On Wednesday February 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared he wanted to attack the city. The population here has quintupled since the start of the war. The city is bombarded daily, and the resistance fighters, most of them Palestinian refugees, are exhausted by the climate of terror. “They will pursue us everywhere, until when? We want to be safe. We are at the end of our strength, (…) we can’t take it anymore”confides a woman.

“We will die in Gaza”

Despite the famine and dire conditions in which they survive, many refugees say they would rather die than leave their homeland. “If they try to force us to migrate to Egypt, we will not go. We will return to Gaza and we will die in Gaza”, assures a man. Egypt, against which Gaza City is backed, has already refused to accommodate a mass exodus of refugees. The country fears that Israel will never allow them to return to Gaza.
