1,200 firefighters are mobilized to fight fires in Gironde. They are supported by the Fire Defense Association (DFCI), which carries out clear cuts to slow the fire.

Trees felled over 15 kilometers, to hope to protect millions in the future. This is the latest strategy decided by firefighters in Gironde, and implemented by the Association for Defense Against Fires (DFCI). “The idea is to clear a width of wood equal to twice the height of the trees so that if the fire arrives, the flame does not touch either the firefighters or the stand on the other side of the road.“, explains Pierre Macé, director of the DFCI Aquitaine.

In Landiras (Gironde), about fifteen machines and 25 men are mobilized to fulfill this task. Two kilometers from the fire, you have to anticipate everything and adapt to extraordinary weather conditions. Once the wood has been cut, it is taken out of the forest plot. The rest is crushed so that the ground is free of any fuel. This decision is hard but it had to be taken“, estimates Bruno Lafon, president of the DFCI Gironde.
