Canada (5-0) scored three in the fourth end to take a 5-2 lead.

The Maple Leaf added three points in the seventh and eighth ends against the Italians, led by Joel Retornaz.

The only team still undefeated, Canada will face Germany on Tuesday.

Gushue teams up with Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker. The group is based in St. John’s.

Gushue, Retornaz and Sweden’s Niklas Edin played in the Olympiad in February. Edin triumphed, Gushue took bronze and Retornaz went 3-6 in Beijing.

Titled five times at the World Championship, Edin escaped two of his first four games in Las Vegas.

Gushue won the 2017 world championship in Edmonton.

The top six at the end of the round robin will advance to the knockout stages, with a bye to the semifinals for the top two.

The other teams in the top six will play on Saturday, with the challenge of taking part in the semi-finals on Saturday evening.

The medal matches will take place on Sunday.
