[Critique] “VV5”, Vald | The duty

French rapper Vald presents VV5a (largely) improved version of his album V, released in February 2022, which was an immediate success. Thirteen titles of dark, sharp and, above all, highly addictive hip-hop, thus put an end to the project now rich with around thirty pieces, for a more coherent whole than ever. “I smoke too much and I eat badly, of course, I don’t meditate / I’m not proud of you, I’m not proud of myself, every day, I drink at least two Cokes. Faithful to himself, Vald delivers honest texts, where self-mockery and the second degree always take precedence, and reveal with disconcerting simplicity the failings of our society. VERY LOW REFLECTIONS is certainly one of the most impactful tracks, eloquent too, since the rapper shows himself vulnerable to it without falling into gravity or voyeurism. As for NO RETURN, Vald tells a more universal story, common to both sides of the Atlantic, tinged by systemic racism and contemporary inequalities in particular. Listen on repeat!
