“They cut my hair / Showed the will of God / Who’s the savage between the two of us / Come and tell me in the whites of my eyes”, extricates Matiu from the back of his throat, in Innu, in the title track of this second album. Not his own throat: his grandfather’s. Those of forced pensioners. four years later Petikat, the tone has changed dramatically. Resignation is over, the time has come for affirmation. “It seems like a long time / I haven’t howled in the wind”, launches Matiu (Matthew Vachon) in a furious sarabande à la Cowboys Fringants. In Mom, if darkness is still black, love prevails and support for the mother is imbued with a tenderness that softens the roughness of everyday life. The production, arrangements, mixing and formidable guitars of Louis-Jean Cormier, from Sept-Îles, provided Matiu with the “four-flasher” vehicle that goes all the way to emotions, finally released. Yes, we have made progress. Even when we ride together.
