[Critique] “The Path of Broken Pots”, Simon Lachance

We already appreciated the delicate voice, the well-conducted writing, in the strangely distant time of Raton Lover (records released between 2014 and 2019, before the great pandemic hole): this solo record is thereby a return, starting point and new horizon . The melodist has asserted himself, the chords take funny detours that surprise and delight at the same time, the arrangements are resolutely immersed in a no man’s land à la Daniel Bélanger, where simplicity and complexity meet. It sings pop, good for the charts, and it stays away from a consensual center. Each song is a little adventure, we discover the path as we go along, with the supple step of a slightly soulful pop in The pain never liesto the rock cadence of the 1970s in Coax me. The references, certainly assumed, are not too strong: just enough for the game to be pleasant. This gives us a smooth and intelligent record that seems to have always existed: a rarer quality than one would think.
