[Critique] Seven Palms, Paul Simon

Percussions evoke a religious past. An acoustic guitar brings back to the origin the one who, with and without Art Garfunkel, rocked and shook our lives so much. And then Paul Simon sings, the soft tone so familiar: “ I’ve been thinking… » First words of the first of the seven « psalms » composing the great work that is this new album. Thirty-three solemn and intimate minutes at a time. Reflections, observations, metaphors coexist. Who else can sum up America’s dilemma by making cows talk? ” I heard two cows in a conversation /One called the other one a name / In my professional opinion / All cows in the country must bear the blame », sings Simon. As soon as we listen, we hear the echoes of a whole life of melodies and sounds found near and far, a life trying to evolve and understand. Waitthe last movement, asks for a reprieve from death: I hear the ghost songs I own. ” U.S. too. What if we listened to everything again? Masterful high point.
