[Critique] “Queen of Me”, Shania Twain

While we ruin ourselves in VIP packages at the prospect of not recognizing Madonna behind her umpteenth facelift, another return is certainly worth the detour. If Canadian-born superstar Shania Twain happens to turn into a glam-rock singer for the music video for Waking Up Dreaming, his sixth album is no less authentically a victory against fate. Freeing himself from his Svengali “Mutt” Lange, overcoming Lyme disease, that justifies Queen of Me : the singer belongs to herself more than ever. The attitude is the same as in the days of Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under ? (in 1995!), but with a surplus of joy that makes you perky: GiddyUp!, a rallying cry, will fill the dance floors of America’s saloons. Shania could be Taylor Swift’s big sister in the never-ending fight for self-respect. In Not Just a Girlwhich is also the title of the Netflix documentary dedicated to Twain last year, the points are on the I. And the fist is raised.
