American comedian, actor and screenwriter Mo Amer, known and recognized south of the border especially for his shows Mo Amer: Mohammed in Texas and Mo Amer: The Vagabondoffers with Mo his very first comedy series for Netflix. Largely autobiographical, it vividly follows the daily life of Mo Najjar, a thirty-year-old Palestinian refugee who has lived in Houston since childhood and is still awaiting citizenship.
Mo is addicted to olive oil. He speaks impeccable Arabic, English and Spanish – he is often mistaken for a Mexican -, lives with his mother (Farah Bsieso), his brother (Omar Elba) and their cat in a Texas pavilion and provides for their needs while frequenting the very badass Maria (Teresa Ruiz). When he loses his job and finds himself in a shooting, things will suddenly take an incredible, burlesque turn. The series notably tackles subjects such as multiculturalism, opioid addiction and immigration while perfectly playing with the clichés and aberrations of white American society.
In short, Mo is a hilarious series with fine, sarcastic, incisive humor, and above all hyper-current and effective. The characters, for their part, whether main or secondary, are as surprising as they are endearing with their always biting almost cult replies. Additional guarantee of quality, Mo is also co-produced by A24 (Euphoria, Uncut Gems), whose ultra-slick aesthetic is recognizable.
