[Critique] “Live at FIMAV”, Growlers Choir

The project is, to our knowledge, unique in the world: Growlers Choir, a Quebec choir made up of singers from the great family of extreme metal — black metal for Yves Godbout of Within Anguish, Viking and symphonic metal for Corinne Cardinal and Maude Théberge de Valfreya, etc. Under the direction of composer and sound artist Pierre-Luc Senécal, the Growlers howled, growled, even coughed, on a stage at FIMAV in 2021, which is now publishing the fascinating recording. The two long flagship works, Tea day king (on the theme of the class struggle, fantastic version, narrated by the poet Fortner Anderson) and HateMachine, link the group’s approach to its metal origins, the discharges of drums and the patterns of guitars presented in their simplest expression to leave all the room to the voices. Even more captivating are the three movements of the avant-garde Hydrawhich allow Senécal to exploit all the textural, noise and rhythmic richness of these athletic and extraordinary voices.
