Kode9, boss of label Hyperdub (Jessy Lanza, Burial, Loraine James), is Scottish by origin, and all this confusion caused by the Brexit inspired him a new concept of “sound fiction” which he called astro–You’re welcome and which Escapology, his first album in seven years, serves as the musical backbone. The multimedia artist, pioneer of grime, 2-step, then dubstep, then footwork – the main influence of the rhythmic patterns offered on the album -, this time brings his sound universe closer to Pierre Schaeffer’s concrete music, as illustrated in the sound research of the percussions of The Break Up at the beginning of the album and in the composition In the Shadow of Ben Hope (note that this album is even better listened to with headphones). Futuristic, mysterious and puzzling, Kode9 leaps from one brief thumbnail to another, from footwork to jungle (on Lagrange Pointamong others), demonstrating a particularly ingenious sense of composition that will recall the avant-garde style of the American Jlin.
