[Critique] “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd”, Lana Del Rey

Flowing, but occasionally confusing, this 9e album with a telescopic title is a new stone added by Lana Del Rey to the building of her own myth. Having become one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of her generation, Del Rey again quotes the rich history of Laurel Canyon in lyricism and precious orchestrations, adding gospel influence to the soundscape, from The Grants, in opening. less grand than Blue Banisters (2021), the album distils a form of mystery, in the soft breath of her voice, in the impressionist violin and piano scores, in the intimacy and vulnerability of the subjects addressed (rape on A&W, the title track of the album). The musician also revisits the aesthetics of her beginnings by bringing back the influence of rap in a few songs, which have the merit of shaking up the monotony that threatens to settle over time — excellent Fishtail And peppers, this one with rapper Tommy Genesis. Jon Batiste, Father John Misty and Jack Antonoff also contribute to the success.
