[Critique] “Debussy”, Louis Lortie and Hélène Mercier

This generous CD released on Friday brings together the Small Suitetranscriptions for two pianos of the 1D Arabesqueof the slavic ballad and of the girl with linen hairthem Six ancient epigraphs, Scottish march, Andante cantabile as well as the transcription for two pianos by André Caplet of The sea. If Louis Lortie is a great promoter of the brilliant Fazioli pianos, this disc is recorded on two Bösendorfer, instruments reputed to be more “tender” and elegant. Proponents of a more impressionistic than angular Debussy will love the choice. The advantages of this release are nonetheless multiple: the perfect program, the sound quality (a little distant and haloed all the same) and a good quality opportunism, because the competition in isolated disc dates. Those looking for a physical product will struggle to find Austbö-Helffer (HM), Duo Crommelynck (Claves) or Chaplin-Cassard (Decca France). Beautiful editorial initiative for a very pleasant disc devoid of stunning musical thrills.
