How to resolve the migration crisis in Lampedusa? The subject has divided European countries for many years.

Ursula von der Leyen and Georgia Meloni are side by side on the island of Lampedusa (Italy). The visit is a sign of a new departure in European migration policy. VS’aret which is what the President of the European Commission hopes in any case. “I came to tell you that immigrationn is a European challenge”, she says. For ten years, there have been hundreds of deaths, thousands of arrivals and a powerless Europe.

Complex arrivals

On the one hand, there are the countries on the front line which are unable to absorb the migratory wave on their own. On the other hand, there are states attached to their sovereignty. France, for example, is less welcoming than Germany. Europe is trying to set up a system of sanctions, but Hungary and Poland are opposed to it categorically. “Countries feel overwhelmed by the situation. We always apply the same recipes, that is to say a measure of closing borders. This only happens in more difficult conditions dramatic”explains François Gemennemigration specialist.
