COVID-19: Ontario tightens health measures against Omicron
Ontario announced a new round of health measures on Monday to deal with the spread of the Omicron variant and the rise in cases in the province.
“We are facing a tsunami of new cases in the days and weeks to come,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said at a morning press briefing.
The return to class in person was thus postponed for two weeks when it was originally scheduled for January 5.
The Ford government has also decided to close restaurants, bars, as well as museums and movie theaters effective Wednesday. Indoor gatherings will also be reduced to five people indoors and 10 outdoors.
“We are preparing for the impact. […] Evidence tells us that approximately 1% of people who are infected with Omicron [dans la province] will end up in hospital ”, underlined the Prime Minister, while qualifying as“ alarming ”the number of hospitalizations.
The most populous province recorded 13,578 new infections for this first day of the week, a total that is down from the previous days.
Health Minister Christine Elliot mentioned on Twitter that 1,232 Ontarians were hospitalized with the virus and 248 patients are in intensive care. She said, however, that not all hospitals provide their data over the weekend.
Almost 89,000 vaccines have been administered in Ontario in the past 24 hours.
In Quebec, the Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé, recalled on Twitter that the appointments for the 3rd dose of the vaccine will be available from Tuesday for Quebecers aged 55 to 59 years.
