In China, faced with an upsurge in Covid-19 cases, the metropolis of Shanghai, which has 25 million inhabitants, has decreed strict confinement by district, which will apply from Monday March 28. Journalist Arnauld Miguet, present in Shanghai, explains how it works.

From Monday March 28, the eastern part of the city of Shanghai (China), which has 9 million inhabitants, “will be completely deserted since there will be strict confinement with a ban on leaving the house, no more public transport. Offices and factories will be closed for five days”explains journalist Arnauld Miguet, present in Shanghai (China).

“From the [vendredi 1er avril], it is the western part of the city that will be confined. The streets are already deserted. For a week now, authorities have been saying there will be no lockdown in Shanghai. Finally, they decided to cut the pear in half with this confinement in two stages. Why ? Because there is a resurgence of the epidemic with the Omicron variant”, concludes the journalist. With more than 2,700 new cases of Covid-19 on Sunday March 27, there have never been so many cases in Shanghai since the start of the pandemic.
