Caracas and all of Venezuela were plunged into darkness on Friday, August 30, for hours. By candlelight, a woman shows her defrosted freezer: the products will be lost. In the capital, queues formed to collect water. In some neighborhoods, the taps ran dry, the pumps not working without electricity.
In the streets, some residents gathered around generators to recharge their phones.There is no communication, I have not been able to communicate with my family”laments a woman. The whole country has been paralyzed. Gas stations, like many stores, have left their shutters down. Others have opened, in the light of mobile phones. The capital’s metro, however, has remained closed.
On national television, the president, Nicolhass Maduro, accused the opposition of sabotage. Indeed, the country has been going through a political and economic crisis for years. The giant blackout may be due to the dilapidated infrastructure: in 2019, the country was already without electricity for five days. The situation now seems to be gradually improving.
