With rising prices, customers are changing their eating habits and consuming less meat. All fresh products are affected by this decrease.

Customers no longer go to butcher shops as regularly, Tuesday, October 4. “I prefer to buy quality, pay the price and buy less”, says a customer. Others replace meat with other foods: “By eggs, by fish, by lentils, by split peas”, lists a woman. In 2022, meat consumption has decreased by more than 8%, in particular due to inflation.

“Today, we are at exactly 11 euros for a good eater, a good portion and before we were at less than ten euros”, explains Mickaël Hairault, manager of the Huet butchery in Migné-Auxances (Vienne). On average, this butcher has increased its prices by 7% and sees the basket of its customers decrease. Customers are more likely to buy cheaper poultry, although its prices are also rising. A chicken fillet used to cost less than 15 euros per kilo. “We are at a little less than 20 euros per kilo”noted Edouard Normand, manager of the Normand butcher’s shop. Consumption of fresh produce has fallen by an average of 6% in one year.
