Construction holidays | 18 dead in road accidents

A total of 18 people died in 17 road accidents during the construction holiday this year.

There were 19 fatal collisions totaling 24 deaths last year for the same period.

This is what emerges from the road report of the long construction holiday break made public by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). The authorities carried out increased surveillance during this busier period on the roads.

“Numerous police operations were held from July 19 to August 4 throughout the territory, including recreational and tourist activities on bodies of water and off-road,” the police force said in a press release.

According to the police force, failure to comply with signs and speed limits, driving while impaired by drugs, alcohol or a combination of the two are the causes in the majority of cases. Several passengers and drivers have also been reported to have failed to wear safety equipment in some accidents that occurred during off-road activities.
