Brush clearing is mandatory in municipalities particularly exposed to forest fires. It is an obligation for local authorities, but also for individuals, because it is a good way to slow the spread of flames. Report in the Alpes-Maritimes.
The summer season has not yet started, but in Levens (Alpes-Maritimes), the sapeurs foresters are already at work. Tuesday, April 25 in the morning, they cleared brush to create a firewall zone in the forest. All year round, these 184 agents from the Alpes-Maritimes maintain the beds to prevent fires. But individuals also have their share of the work.
46 fire starts since the beginning of the year
In wooded areas, or less than 200 meters from the forest, owners must clear brush, up to 50 meters around the house. The agents of the municipality explain how to go about it. The interview must be carried out before the 1er July, under penalty of a fine of up to 30 euros per square meter not maintained. A preventive action, but crucial. Since the beginning of the year, the Alpes-Maritimes have already experienced 46 fire outbreaks.
