Like every year, at Christmas, a considerable number of gifts are resold, but this time it is mainly to make ends meet or finance essential purchases.

It sometimes happens that Santa Claus not only makes people happy, it even happens that he sends certain gifts in duplicate, like in this family from Seine-Saint-Denis who received two pairs of identical shoes as well as two sets of brushes to hair. They will resell them. “If it’s so they’re in the back of the cupboard and gathering dust, there’s no point”explains Angélique Brille, the mother. “We prefer to resell them and buy a little something on the side.”

The emergency is the family computer, which has stopped working since the beginning of the week. Angélique hopes to be able to pay for part of it thanks to the resale of new shoes. “Initially we will put them at 70 euros. Several small sales will allow us to buy a tower for the computer.”

A million listings on Ebay

Dolls, accessories, perfume, in the coming days more than a million ads will be put online on Ebay alone, three times more than normal. The trend would be slightly increasing compared to the previous year for “recover purchasing power in inflationary periods and also because there is eco-citizen awareness”, according to Flora Louvet, communications director at Rakuten France. A quarter of French people say they are ready to resell their gifts, which is almost twice as many as ten years ago.
