Traditions are important to Peru. On the evening of December 24, families meet with their grandparents, then wait until midnight for mass, and it is only after mass that we can enjoy the Christmas meal! It’s a real family celebration, which continues on December 25 rather alongside his friends.
In the kitchen, it’s the stuffed turkey that is shared in the middle of the table, with sweet potatoes and apples. And for dessert, fruits are offered in a large basket after the meal. But, there is a tradition before the meal and before the mass: hot chocolate and panettone! It is not uncommon to see Peruvians offering their hot chocolates to the poorest during this period, with small gifts.
Religion, music, sharing, solidarity and the transmission of values are an integral part of Peruvian Christmas celebrations.
Another important holiday in Peru: October 31, “El Señor de los Milagros” (the lord of miracles), with steps colored in purple, with carpets of flowers. And for the New Year: it’s the big party by the sea, with a few beers and a good Peruvian ceviche!
Feliz año nuevo!
