With the approval of his Prime Minister, Pierre Fitzgibbon has created a gigantic machine at the service of the economy. All government levers are at the beck and call of economic development: environment, finance, energy, innovation. For example, one only has to see Benoit Charrette’s shenanigans in the Northvolt case to understand how little the environment counts in this government’s all-out economy scenario.
The government’s discourse may be full of carbon neutrality objectives, reduction of the vehicle fleet or energy efficiency, but it is difficult to understand how this enterprise of unbridled harnessing of resources in the service of development at all costs can really serve the interests of Quebecers in the medium and long term.
Fitzgibbon’s departure opens the door to a reflection on the main economic and societal challenges and needs of Quebec. Why not take advantage of the opportunity to change the name and mission of the super-ministry he occupied by creating a real Ministry of Sustainable Development ? By integrating the concepts of sustainable development, this new ministry could guide the development of Quebec in an ethical, ecological and equitable way for present and future generations. This would also relieve the Ministry of the Environment of its painful role as moral guarantor of dubious projects and allow it to discharge its responsibilities without compromise.
