Child crime in the Church: first six victims compensated

The first six victims of sexual violence in the Church were compensated by the Selam fund (fund for solidarity and the fight against sexual assault on minors), set up after the publication of the Sauvé report on the extent of pedocrime in the Church since 1950, learned franceinfo from the Independent National Authority for Recognition and Reparation (Inirr), confirming information from the Journal du Dimanche.

The amounts paid to these six people remain confidential, but the maximum financial compensation provided by the fund is 60,000 euros per victim. The structure established a “graduation of the severity of the situation” comprising three criteria, each ranging from 1 to 10. The first criterion assesses the seriousness of the facts, the second measures the seriousness of the “failures” of the Church, the third evaluates “the seriousness of the health consequences” (physical, mental and social) of the victims.

Other compensation will take place during the summer. According to the Sauvét report, 330,000 people over 18 have been sexually abused since 1950 when they were minors, by clerics, religious or people connected with the Church. At least 736 victims contacted the Inirr. To date, the Selam fund has an envelope of 20 million euros from the Church, certain bishops and donations.
