Chevy | The electric Equinox will focus on its affordability

“We are at a turning point where electric vehicles will be a popular choice for the next generation of customers and the electric Equinox will lead the charge for us. The big boss of General Motors, Mary Barra, went there last week with an unequivocal statement on the role of democratization that the electric version of the Equinox which has been officially unveiled will play.

The compact SUV, which had been struggling to really stand out in its segment for several years, now has its electric motors and its resolutely modern design to flesh out its argument. Like modern electric models, it hides its grille in an aerodynamic design. Its very smooth shapes are reminiscent of the quest for kilometers that manufacturers indulge in with their electric models.

Very affordable

But, beyond the presentation of the product, it is its accessibility that impresses. General Motors says up front that the base front-wheel-drive 1LT trim will retail for just $35,000 before subtracting government incentives. That’s about $3,000 less than a Chevrolet Bolt while offering a significantly more versatile format and a comparable range of 400 km. This version of the Equinox is powered by a 210 hp and 242 lb-ft electric motor.

A twin-engine all-wheel-drive version with 290 hp 346 lb-ft of torque in reserve will also be offered. In its case, the targeted autonomy is 450 km, about thirty kilometers less than the optional two-wheel drive version. All models are compatible with fast charging stations of up to 150 kW, which ensures a gain of 112 km in 10 minutes. It will nevertheless be necessary to wait a little more than a year to see the first copies crisscrossing the Canadian roads.
