Château Guiraud, one of the most emblematic properties of the Sauternes appellation, always one step ahead and a certain vision of how to produce its wines. Undoubtedly the charisma and perseverance of its former owner, Xavier Planty, who has now left the reins of the property to his son and daughter-in-law, Luc and Clémence Planty, have been a powerful lever in the aura possessed by this Chateau. After having created a dry white wine cuvée – the G de Guiraud – a few years ago, Luc and Clémence decided to raise the quality and requirement level a little higher by creating a Grand Vin Blanc Sec. whose first vintage, 2020, has just been put on sale.
Guillaume Seigue: Certified in organic farming like the rest of the property, this wine, produced in 11,000 bottles, already has a beautiful identity. Wishing to compete with the greatest white wines of Bordeaux, it already has a rare elegance. The blend, although logical in the sector, gives pride of place to 70% Sauvignon Blanc and the rest to Sémillon.
Fermentation takes place directly in the barrels used to make Sauternes de Château Guiraud and the aging lasts 12 months. This brings a nice roundness without the disadvantage of sweetness which does not exist. In the mouth we find citrus fruits, a very great freshness and an acidity which allow a good balance and a finesse worthy of the great whites. A shot transformed from the first try for this new cuvée which proves once again that the Sauternes terroir allows a diversity of wines that we thought were bygone when historically, dry whites were in order in the sector. A fair return of things, naturally.
Bon vivant, always ready to taste and share his most beautiful encounters in the world of wine and spirits, Guillaume is the editor of the blog www.godblessbacchus.blogspot.com but also for the site www.toutlevin.com. A glass in his left hand and a pen in his right hand, he travels throughout the year to the different properties over the terroirs and regions. Fascinated by the world of wine since his childhood, he likes above all to exchange with the “stories makers” as he likes to call the winegrowers. Mixology also takes a big place in his life with an all-consuming passion for creating cocktails.
