A highway collapsed in China on the night of Tuesday April 30, taking around twenty cars with it. The death toll is 24.
All that remains is a gaping hole in a section of highway in Guangdon province, China. The ground gave way under the wheels of motorists for nearly 20 meters. At 2 a.m., around twenty cars found themselves trapped in the collapse. In the images, columns of flames rise several meters. Nearly 500 rescuers were dispatched, according to the authorities. At least 24 people lost their lives.
A region particularly affected by bad weather in recent weeks
On the morning of Wednesday, May 1, emergency vehicles and cranes were still working. Several people remain without news of their loved ones. Among them, a woman who tried, in vain, to contact a family of five whose phones were turned off. Guangdon province is located in southeastern China, an industrial region particularly affected by bad weather in recent weeks. Torrential rains caused impressive flooding and landslides, which could have weakened infrastructure.
