Employees of the Carrefour group suffering from endometriosis will be entitled to 12 days of absence per year, with no obligation to take sick leave. Other companies go even further.

Perhaps the end of a taboo concerning women’s health. Carrefour, the retail giant, offers leave to its employeeses who suffer from severe endometriosis, this disease responsible for very painful periods in one in ten women. “It hurts a lot, being on the shelves always standing, bent over, I don’t think it’s a good idea”believes Pauline Louvet, hostess at Carrefour.

The initiative limited to cases of severe endometriosis

Employees of the group suffering from endometriosis will be entitled to 12 days of absence per year, with no obligation to take sick leave, at the expense of the company. The initiative is limited to severe cases of endometriosis, but other companies are going further. In Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), a start-up grants menstrual leave if necessary to the eight women who work there. A bill from environmentalists in favor of menstrual leave, based on the Spanish model, should be tabled at the end of May. Spain is the first country in Europe to have implemented the measure for women.
