Adriana Leon and Cloé Lacasse scored in the second half to help the Canadian women’s soccer team shut out the Mexicans 2-0 on Saturday in a pre-Olympic friendly match.
Leon accepted a pass from Evelyne Viens in the 73rde minute before unleashing a good left-footed shot that beat goalkeeper Celeste Espino. She then opened the scoring in front of a crowd of 15,319 spectators at Saputo stadium.
Lacasse increased the lead at the 86the minute, when she calmly found the back of the net on a breakaway. Viens collected a second assist in the sequence.
Canada improved to 23-2-3 all-time against the Mexicans. Ranked ninth in the world, the representatives of the maple leaf had not won in their last two outings against Mexico (0-1-1), in November 2021.
The two teams will cross swords again on Tuesday, at BMO Field in Toronto, to close this pre-Olympic series.
The Canadian women, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021, will begin the defense of their Olympic title against New Zealand on July 25.
Coach Bev Priestman has named a squad of 25 players for the two matches against Mexico. Only 18 players, plus four substitutes, will travel to Paris for the Summer Games.
