Canadian Pacific reaches tentative agreement with United Steelworkers

(Calgary) The Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) said Thursday that it has reached a tentative agreement with the union representing approximately 550 administrative and intermodal support workers in Canada.

The rail carrier said the terms of the tentative agreement with Steelworkers Local 1976 would not be made public until the contract is ratified.

CP Chief Executive Keith Creel said the tentative agreement is a testament to the hard work and commitment of both parties.

The railroad signed a new contract last month with Unifor, the union that represents 1,200 workers responsible for maintaining rail cars and locomotives.

The collective bargaining agreements come as CP awaits a decision from the US Surface Transportation Board, which is reviewing its proposed acquisition of the US Kansas City Southern Railroad.

The decision, expected later this quarter, is the final hurdle CP faces in its takeover bid.
