The American gave a card of 62 (- 8), while Rory McIlroy managed a decisive birdie on 15e pennant, so both players climbed to the top of the standings at the Canadian Open on Saturday.

Finau and the Northern Irishman have a cumulative score of -11 after three rounds, two strokes ahead of the group of four pursuers.

Finau had the best round of the tournament, rocketing up the leaderboard thanks to his seven birdies and his eagle on the course at St. George’s Golf and Country Club.

“I didn’t finish the way I wanted yesterday and I think that was the spark to go for a good round today,” said Finau, who was tied in 16e position after the first two rounds. “It’s not bad what I did. I had a few birdies and played flawless golf. »

Whenever you’re at the top of the leaderboard and have a chance to win a tournament on the PGA Tour, it’s exciting.

Finau played on the Canadian PGA Tour in 2013 and well remembers touring the country with fellow golfer JJ Spaun.

“It’s nice to be back in Canada,” said Finau, who was paired with Spaun for the first two rounds of the tournament. “It almost feels like a tournament at home. I’m getting a lot of fan love, which is pretty amazing. »

Good day for McIlroy

Rory McIlroy started the day tied with four other golfers in the second tier, but came out on top with six birdies and a 65 (-5) card.

His final birdie came on the 15the hole when he was able to extricate himself from a bad situation – his approach shot had gone over the green.

So 74 feet from the cut, he hit an approach shot that got him within just nine feet of it.

It’s one of those approach shots where I tried to go onto the green and spin the ball to get closer to the cup. Fortunately, I managed a nice putt to establish myself at – 11.

Americans Justin Thomas (63), Sam Burns (65), Wyndham Clark (68) and Alex Smalley (67) are tied at 3e rank with a cumulative score of – 9. The weather reports for this Sunday predict showers, even thunderstorms.

Nick Taylor added a 67 (-3) card and is the highest-ranked Canadian – at 15e rank with a total of -5. Corey Conners (-4) and Adam Svensson (-3) respectively took the 19e and 29e position.
