(Ottawa) The number of job vacancies fell 4.8% in October to its lowest level since August 2021, Statistics Canada said Thursday.
The agency said the number of vacancies fell from 44,300 to 871,300 in October.
The month-over-month decline came as job vacancies in the construction industry fell 17,200 or 20.4%. In administrative and support, waste management and remediation services, the drop is 11,000 vacancies or 19.9%.
According to Statistics Canada, no sector recorded a statistically significant increase in its number of vacancies, although the figure remained close to record levels in health care and social assistance.
The job vacancy rate — the number of job vacancies as a proportion of total labor demand — was 4.9% in October, the lowest since June 2021.
There were 1.2 unemployed for every job vacancy in October, up from a low of 1.0 in June, but down from 2.0 in February 2020, before the pandemic.
